In 2010, months after Haiti's devastating quake, a catastrophic cholera epidemic began. Scientists traced the outbreak to U.N. peacekeepers.

To sum up what happened (biologically), cholera had not existed in Haiti for at least a century before this happened, this means that Haitian people had 0 immunity to any form of the bacteria (cholera is really common in many parts of the world). That’s why the death toll is so horrendous. The bacterial strain was isolated and was found a match for a cholera strain from Nepal, and the UN had sent over peacekeepers from Nepal.

The article likens this to what happened when Europeans brought smallpox to America, so, yes, it’s indeed a very serious problem. And it was their careless handling of fecal matter that introduced a disease that has spread and stayed on the island since 2010.
